Natural Home Remedies for Insomnia

I decided to write this article on natural home remedies for insomnia because the lack of sleep is probably one of the most frustrating things that can happen to us because we just know that our whole day is going to be one long battle fighting sluggishness and disorientation at work.

And worst of all, if we continue to suffer from a loss of sleep on a regular basis... it can become more serious... you may have insomnia.Try some of these natural home remedies for insomnia

There are many causes for insomnia... anything from heart diseases to hormonial changes within your body to depression and even sleep apnea. So if you are experiencing trouble sleeping at night... you may want to try some natural remedies to see if it improves your sleeping patterns.

However, I have to definitely say that you SHOULD seek professional advice from your doctor if you continue to get a lack of sleep because it could mean something more serious.

After some research, here are some of the natural home remedies for insomnia that may be effective for you:

  • Melatonin - this is a hormone that is created naturally within the body. And it is a popular home remedy for insomnia. You see, the brain makes serotonin which is then converted to melatonin which helps you go to sleep naturally. Sometimes, if your body isn't producing enough of the melatonin... you may want to think about taking this supplement to see if it helps you fall asleep naturally. Take it in the evening before you retire for the bedroom.
  • Aromatherapy - I talked about this in other articles... I enjoy trying out different scented candles and oils that produce a heady and sedative quality of scents that wafts throughout the house. Try lavender, chamomile and ylang ylang. These scents may help bring about a restful sleep... but be sure to blow out the candles BEFORE going to bed!
  • Meditation - I know of folks who swear by the Yoga practice of deep breathing and meditation. Try some Yoga or some variation before heading off to bed. It may help you fall asleep naturally.
  • Valerian - This is an non-addictive supplement that has been used for many years to help treat insomnia. It is supposed to help calm the brain's neurotransmitters.
  • Diet - I know, I know... the big "D" word! But there is some truth to diets... you can try avoiding anything with caffeine and foods that contain sugar. Both items are drugs that can accelerate your body's internal machine which is exactly the opposite of what you would like to do... sleep. Instead... try eating foods that are rich in magnesium such as any vegetable that is dark green. Try some nuts like raw almonds and cashews... and bran. You owe it to yourself to see if eating these foods do have a tremendous effect on your sleeping habits. And besides... if you lose a couple of pounds too... it is a win-win situation.
  • Exercise - Yes, I know! But I'm sorry... human beings were designed to move around... and in this day and age... many of us has forgotten to do them on a regular basis. So we need to get a little exercise into our day just to get the old blood flowing. I would just do moderate to easy exercises if you haven't done much for a while. And I would definitely NOT exercise before bedtime... that would just be counter-productive.
  • The next thing you should do is double check your comfort with your bed and pillows. These are the tools that helps your body sleep without injury. Also, make sure the climate control at night is adjusted for your body's comfort... if you can... try not to be too hot or too cold... keep the temperature just right.
  • Another thing to try is the old ancient art of acupuncture and drink cups of calming teas. Try Chamomile and Lemon Balm.
  • Also, you may be taking some prescription drugs that is causing your insomnia. This is why it is critically important to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist. He may want you to try something else that is less likely to keep you awake at night.

So try one or more of these ideas of natural home remedies for insomnia. And I hope you get a good night sleep soon...
