How to "Get Over" Your Fears
This title may be a little misleading. What I wanted to deal with in this article is the fact that even if you
told someone close to you... a friend or a family member about your fears... many times, more often than not, you
won't get that sympathetic shoulder you were expecting.
Instead you may get a eye roll or even one of those "You'll get over it" or "Just forget about it and it will go
away."
Well SORRY to bother you!! Huh?

Most folks don't understand that it isn't easy to turn off your fears like you can do with a water faucet, ya
know? The fears some of us have are buried so deep within us that it becomes part of us.
And just getting past a fear doesn't necessarily mean that fear will be gone forever. No... but you CAN find
ways to relieve the panics and anxieties that you get when you are actually confronted by that fear.
Let me explain...
You see, facing fears is not very easy to do. In fact, it is probably the HARDEST thing that we ever can do. We
have something working against us... our biological urge to run away from any perceived danger... real or
imagined.
Which leads us to the first thing you should do if you want to "deal with it." And that is to identify whether
or not your fears are credible or irrational.
For example, if your fears are credible... such as expecting harm from an abusive ex... well, you would take
action by filing for an restraining order.
Alternatively, if you decide that your fears are irrational (and by no means does that mean you are crazy)...
then you can analyze that fear.
For instance, right now... there is an overblown reaction (in my opinion) to the Swine Flu
originating from Mexico. So far, perhaps 200 poor folks have died from this specific disease. And most of those
deaths are in Mexico. But to put it in perspective... over 20,000 American die each year from the common flu and we
never hear about it.
So to being so afraid of catching the Swine Flu and staying inside the
house can be called irrational.
But it helps to know that statistically, you probably have a better chance of getting struck by lightning that
catching the Swine Flu.
Anyways... there are things you can do for the next step. And that is... you can learn to deal with your fears
in a rational and responsible way.
You could try some breathing techniques (which I heard works very well), self hypnosis or you may even need to
contact your family doctor and get a prescription.
The key thing here is to identify your fears... and then take action to alleviate or eliminate
that fear. Sometimes you cannot expect sympathy from someone close to you... and why not? Everyone has problems...
and many times they won't admit it or reveal that... so they appear to be sympathetic or overwhelmed.
But not you! You are going to find out how to deal with your fears... once and for all!
Kate :)
