Tips How to Cure Phobias
There are tons of reasons why we all of a sudden get sweaty palms and dry mouths... anything from changing jobs,
to visiting relatives or even moving to a new home. When we are uncertain of the outcome, we get a little
anxious.
Take for example when you get a new home, you have to jump through a lot of hoops and then sign the mortgage
papers. You may start to have doubts whether or not you made the right decision to buy the home. But usually, that
anxious feeling goes away after a day or two...
And the purpose of this article is to point out the difference between just being anxious (which is normal) or
anxiety (which is excessive worrying).
Now think about this for a minute, if your anxious feelings seem to pop up all of a sudden and for absolutely no
reasons... it can be a warning sign that you may have an anxiety disorder. It is much, much more that just
nervousness or anticipation. You see, anxiety disorder is a very broad term that describes numerous conditions that
many folks have. And these disorders are not something that takes a little willpower or "just get over it" advice.
You need a little more help with anxiety disorders.
So let's go into a little more detail about anxiety. If you are feeling anxious about a specific idea or a
specific situation, that would be called a simple or specific phobia. And I know, I know! Just because this is
happening to you doesn't mean it feels "simple" at all! For instance, somebody else may scream in a temporary
fright at the sight of a nasty looking spider on the bedroom wall -- you may have a phobia about spiders and feel
an intense feeling of anxiety that a spider may be lurking about the house -- and there isn't a spider in
sight.
And what happens is that someone with anxiety may be so worried and so scared of something that isn't there,
that they perceive the threat as "real" and become immobilized and overwhelmed with alarm. Even though you KNOW
inside that the fear is not real, and you really, really want to overcome that fear to get your normal life
back.
Of course you are not alone. Did you know that at least 1 in 10 adults have a specific or simple
phobia? It's true. And that kind of phobia can be fear of heights,
fear of bridges, fear of flying, fear of crowds and many other specific fears. Many times, simple or specific
phobias originate from childhood fears. Usually, as a child, our childhood phobias go away as we get a little
older. But sometimes, it doesn't and get much more scary as we become adults.
Another common action that phobia
suffers take is avoidance of whatever you are afraid of... rather than seeking professional help. And as we
now know, avoiding the problem doesn't help at all. Did you know that there are two types of therapy that can help your phobias? One is called behavorial and the
other is cognitive.
Behavioral therapy isn't concerned with why and how the phobia happens or feels -- it just gets
you to change how you respond to that fear.
And having a NEW response to that fear that is much better than the old reaction. So if you have a fear of the
elevators for instance, instead of the old reaction of hyperventilating while standing in front of the elevator,
you could just take the stairs. I would just call it "extra" cardio workouts!
On the other hand, Cognitive therapy is about changing the way you "talk" to yourself and
changing your false beliefs.
And so when a situation happens that you are worried about, you go into the modified talking mode. Instead of
saying to yourself, "I'm going to freak out and have an anxiety attack," you will replace that with a new one such
as "I'm scared but I know that I am not in any danger and I'll just walk away."
See the difference between behavorial and cognitive therapy? They both work and they both are effective against
phobias. I suppose you should choose depending on which type of therapy will work best for you.
But know this, there are no instant cures. It takes a little persistance but it is well worth the time you put
into curing your anxiety disorder.
