How to Overcome Your Fear of Flying Phobia...
We lifted off... I didn't even feel the airplane come off the field. And before I
knew it... we were several hundreds of feet off the ground... the biplane made some lazy serpentine turns over
the vast countryside... I saw gorgeous white farmhouses. I began to recognize the features and landscape of my
local community... I even saw my house, my church and even my favorite places to go for fun. After twenty
minutes or so we returned to my friend's property... and he slowly landed onto his grass fields... The entire
trip felt very safe. I was not very nervous at all... I actually enjoyed flying... an experience that almost
never happens! I totally enjoyed this ride....jpg)
You see, I finally accepted a ride on my best friend's biplane. He was a qualified commercial airline pilot that
retired after many years of service. He was aware of my problems and was very considerate.
My point was that the fear of flying can be overcome when you realize that you are really just afraid of the fear
itself...
Even though flying is one of the safest mode of transportation there is... most of us are more nervous to fly in
a plane than drive a car...
Statistics have proven that it is far safer to fly across the country than drive to the airport in your
automobile...
And besides... commercial airline pilots are very well trained to remain calm and make the right choices in an
emergency.
But some of us are just so crippled with the premonition of crashing before we even get in the plane... and it
can generate into excessive worrying which can lead to anxiety or panic attacks.
Here is what I think... the excessive worrying about flying isn't due to the risk of flying... it is due to the
fact that we feel vulnerable while flying and the awareness that life is fragile...
We like to be in control... behind the wheels of our car... but flying is way different experience. And many of
us don't have a choice of transportation... flying is a faster and usually cheaper mode of transportation over
intermediate and long distances... We need to see friends, family and many times for business.
So not flying isn't a choice for us.
Even John Madden, the former coach for the Oakland Raiders during the 1970s had a huge fear of flying... when he
retired, he was famously known for buying a customized bus to take him across the country so he could cover the
football games as a TV commenter.
And so lots of folks MUST fly just to keep their jobs or to see important people... So the worrying starts and
builds up. And for some folks... the worrying gets so bad that they get panic attacks!
Now the information from this site should not used as a substitution for proper medical advice... you should see
your doctor to be diagnosed properly and seek treatment alternatives.
