Coping with Stress at Work Place – Part 1

Everywhere you look… there is stress! You just can’t get away from it forever. But more than likely… there is a lot of stress at work place. And the results of stress at the work place can only be measured by tons of hours of lost productivity for the companies. And for the employees… stress can cause health problems and even lead to the loss of the job.

So what causes stress at work place and what can you do about it? Well, there are several issues that you need to know about that causes work place stress. The first of course is the workload. Too much work can cause stress for many people. What about deadlines for temporary projects? Getting that task completed before the deadline can create stress.

The best thing you can do is organize your tasks. You can plan it out… and make several lists for your short, intermediate and long term goals for that project. Making lists is probably one of the better ways to help you focus your energy and time so it isn’t wasted on stuff that doesn’t matter as much. You may even want to outsource the unimportant things (which by the way, it seems that unimportant things also are huge time wasters).

Another biggie issue that causes a lot of stress is the constant interruptions. Such as phone calls, meetings… co-workers stopping by your desk… emails and other ways. The thing to do here is to keep your interruptions to a minimum so that you can focus on getting your job done. For instance, only answer important emails three times a day. Morning, lunch and afternoon. Don’t even look at the unimportant ones until at the end of the day. You could even have a coworker handle those emails.

Turn off your phone or have the assistant hold all calls. Keep meetings short and productive. Or just ask if the meeting can be handled by using emails.

Here’s a trick that someone told me about to handle co-workers who like to stop by and “chat”… put a phone ear piece on so they will think you are on the phone. But the reality is that you are going to have to let them know that you are working on a deadline and you are fully occupied and cannot be interrupted. Make sure you handle it with sensitivity and tact… because after all… you don’t want to add to your stress or theirs with an miffed co-worker!

Which leads to the next cause for stress at work place. The coworkers… one way to avoid any unpleasantness is to avoid those who give you problems the best you can. Because no matter where you work… there is always bound to be someone who doen’t get along with you. Try to recognize those problem employees and associate with them the least amount as possible. Use emails to communicate with them and keep everything professional.

Some people may even try to find a silver lining around the cloud by noticing 1 likable thing about that person. The truth of the matter is that you can LOVE your job without having to be everyone’s best friend.
