Are You Getting These Burnout Symptoms?
First of all, having a burnout means that you are just tired and exhausted all the time… mentally… physically… and emotionally. So who is likely to become a victim of burnouts?
Well, that could be the young mothers or those who tend to over-volunteer. It could be over-ambitious employees that take on too much and find that no matter how much work is completed… the end is never in sight.
Even employers get burnouts… if you think about it… there is a lot of pressure to turn a business into a profitable machine. And so it can be YOU suffering from burnout symptoms!
I’ll tell you what… are you suffering from any or some of these burnout symptoms:
- Apathy in some or all areas of your life?
- Feeling unsociable and don’t want to see others… become withdrawn?
- Are you chronically fatigued or exhausted all the time?
- Do you have trouble getting a good night sleep?
- Do you see yourself having weight gains or even weight loss?
- Are you depressed a lot?
- Are you angry a lot?
- Do you find yourself having a short temper… do you get angry quickly because of others’ comments or behavior? Are you irritable and on the edge frequently? Do you overreact?
- Some physical burnout symptoms include headaches, aches and pains over your body, and being constantly sick.
- Have you forgotten how to have fun in life?
- Do you have low self-esteem? Do you criticize yourself a lot?
- Are you indulging yourself in foods, alcohol or drugs?
- Do you reluctantly do things all the time?
- Do you have mood swings?
- Are you suffering from anxiety attacks (Note: I recommend that you check out Panic Away by Barry Joe McDonagh).
Now, if you recognize any or some of these burnout symptoms that I described above in yourself… I want you to be aware of that and don’t dismiss it out of hand. Burnouts can have a dramatic effect on the quality of your life.
What you should do is take some positive steps forward to STOP the burnouts from getting worst and change them into a positive life affirming goals. Out of control burnout symptoms can result in further physical and mental problems that can lead to serious disorders. Which you definitely don’t want!
Granted, there are no quicky fix to solve your burnouts. However, you can take steps to lead you down a much happier and healthier path of life.
So what you need to do is enact a form of self inspection… and figure out what is the root cause of your burnouts and try to address that source.
Your options can be anywhere from staying away from the source of your stress… to changing your attitude to that source of stress.
Here’s what you can do about it… think about some positive triggers that sounds good to you:
- How about taking a GREAT vacation to get away from the stress and relax?
- If your job, teammates or the boss is the source of your stress… understand that your job may be a bad fit for you and you should start taking some positive action to finding a new one. Now, it can be easy to blame the economy, company layoffs or being unqualified… but these are just excuses. Just make up your mind and start doing it because your mental health and well-being is so much more important than putting up with the stress every day.
- Learn to say “No” to those who ask for too much from you. Your time is more important and managing that time can help you recover from the stresses of doing too much.
- Find ways to relax and enjoy yourself. Favorite ideas can be taking a hot bubble bath… reading a GREAT fiction book, or re-watch a oldie but goody movie.
- How about rediscovering something that you loved doing in the past and take up that hobby again?
- Or you could look for help from a qualified professional such as a counselor, your family doctor.
My point is this… when you start to see burnout symptoms as I discribed above… it is time to understand what is causing your stresses and find ways to relieve the stress and relax.
I suggest that you check out Totally Tranquil meditation tracks because I use it all the time and it is just terrific!!
I hope you can get back on track and love living life again,
Kate

Burnout is stressful but it is NOT caused by stress. Stress can harm our health and must be reduced, but reducing stress does not get rid of burnout – because stress is a symptom and not a cause.
Burnout is a kind of job depression that is caused by “uncontrollability” – feeling unable to make an impact upon important factors at work or at home so that you feel powerless. Burnout damages and can destroy motivation. Think of motivation as that which gets you moving and performing. When cause in burnout it is harder and harder to get moving.
Burnout can be prevented/overcome by developing “personal power” – feelings of potency, a feeling of I-Can-Do, I can take an action and have an impact. For examples of the kinds of work situations that can cause burnout, see: http://www.docpotter.com/art_no-win-job.html
