How to Prevent and Treat Sinusitis Headache

Sinus headaches or Sinusitis Headache is a pretty common condition that affects a lot of people. This type of headache is caused by mucus congesting the sinuses. And this would happen when you have the flu, cold or allergies. And sinusitis headache is a big problem with those who also have sinus infections.

Let’s talk a little more about what sinuses are… they are open areas in the head where fluids can drain into. And what happens is when you are suffering from allergies or some other upper respiratory infections… the sinuses can fill up with fluids. As you can see… when this fluid also gets thicker… it becomes harder and harder for your body to remove the fluids when you are blowing your nose.

As a result, the pressure that builds up in your sinuses can become painful. And your face can hurt and even your teeth! Because there are sinus cavities located in those areas.

And yeah… sinusitis headache can be a miserable experience. The good news is there are a few things that you CAN do to minimize the pressure build up in the sinuses. You can try taking some over-the-counter medicines for pain relief or a decongestant to help reduce the fluids. These medications can also help you remove the fluids easier when you blow your nose. So again, try taking the decongestants AND expectorants at the same time to help you thin out the mucus and expel it through your nose.

However, based on my experience, being proactive does help a lot if you know that you are susceptible to sinusitis headache. I would take decongestants, eat spicy foods and take hot, steamy showers right away… when you first become aware of the first signs of the flu, allergies or colds.

But what do you do if your sinuses become blocked which usually leads to a sinus infection? In this case, don’t mess around… see your doctor and he may decide to prescribe some antibiotics to help kill the infections and bacteria. At this point… you will be on the road to recovery.

Here is another idea for reducing that sinus pressure… try the Neti Pot How to Prevent and Treat Sinusitis Headache or some similar system to help clear the sinuses. It is a little weird but some folks swear by them. What you do is use a warm solution of water, salt, baking soda to clear up your sinuses. And pour that solution down one nostril and let it flow out the other nostril.

After doing that… you are going to gently blow your nose to expel more mucus. I realize that this isn’t a very attractive or pretty method but it is an effective way to relieve the pressure in your sinuses. Try it next time you need some relief and the more traditional ways aren’t helping relieve your sinusitis headache.

Good luck and get better soon,

Kate :)
